CDC Approved Diabetes Prevention Program Press Release
CDC Approved Diabetes Prevention Program, Free in Hudson
GemCare Wellness Preventing Type 2 Diabetes with Proven Program for Second Year.
Release Date: 12/15/17
Hudson, Ohio: GemCare Wellness, a local health coaching and disease management company, is once again offering the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Diabetes Prevention Program free to the first 20 applicants beginning January 2018.
The GemCare Wellness Diabetes Prevention Program is part of the National Diabetes Prevention Program, led by the CDC. It is based on research that showed people with prediabetes who lost five to seven percent of their body weight reduced their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent.
“We started offering this program because we have seen an increase in the number of Americans with diabetes and prediabetes. One in three adults has prediabetes, some may not even know it,” said James Piper, Vice President, GemCare Wellness. “So far this year, 14 percent of our participants have been identified as no longer prediabetic.”
People diagnosed with prediabetes have higher than normal blood sugar levels and are 5 to 15 times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes within three years if no steps are taken to prevent it. The program offers a proven approach to preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes through reasonable lifestyle changes with the support of a dedicated coach.
Guided by a Registered Dietitian, participants will learn how to:
- Adjust their diet
- Add physical activity to their routine
- Manage stress
- Stay motivated and
- Solve problems that can get in the way of health changes
The program’s group setting provides a supportive environment with people who are facing similar challenges and trying to make the same changes. Together participants celebrate their successes and find ways to overcome obstacles.
GemCare Wellness groups will meet once per week for 16 weeks followed by six months of monthly meetings to maintain the healthy lifestyle. The program begins on January 16, 2018 and will meet at the local Hudson, Ohio office.
